A Servant’s Servant

DAILY DEVOTIONAL 2.3.2020 – MARK 1:1-8 – JOHN THE BAPTIST, PREPARING FOR jESUS

What image comes to mind when you think of a servant? If that servant had their own steward, what would that look like?

The gospel of Mark shows us a picture of Jesus as the “suffering servant.” It is only right that he starts his account of Jesus’s life by telling us about John the Baptist. By John’s own words, he is not worthy to even untie Jesus’s sandals. That menial task was reserved for the lowest slave. John is telling us that he is not worthy to even be the lowest servant to Jesus.

Now couple that with Jesus’s own words that he didn’t come “to be served, but to serve” (Mark 10:45). What do you get? If Jesus came to serve, and John the Baptist was the lowest of the lowest servant, then what does that mean for you and me?

The resulting conclusion is that you and I are servants of The Servant. We work for Jesus, and Jesus is working for the whole world.

Therefore we can’t walk through this life arrogant or too proud to serve others. In other words, be humble. That doesn’t mean you should walk around like a kicked pup, but don’t be to good to be useful.

Work hard and smile often today.
